Villa SHR, Croydon

Contemporary luxury villa on a large 1ha green belt site in Croydon.

“What stood out was their depth of thinking and care.”
We’ve been through a few builds before, but this project was different. It’s not just about clean lines or beautiful finishes. Every choice was backed by intelligence, and a real sense of empathy. The integration of sustainability and beauty was on another level. It’s the kind of project people remember — and try to replicate.

Mr. S.K.

The approximately 100m by 100m site lies in a Local Heritage area and the Metropolitan Green Belt. The main character is provided by the steep (13m) south easterly fall and the extensive coverage of indigenous mature trees. Our initial design response focuses on the outstanding natural beauty of the site, prioritising openness and views of the natural environment.

We analysed orientation and sun path, and optimised the layouts to get maximum benefits of natural light and ventilation. We maximised connection with natural systems by integrating elements like green roofs, living walls, elevated deep planters for the thermal and ecological benefits of the building and to connect with the natural ecological cycles.

We planned for a multi-sensory experience for a rich and engaging environment by combining visual features such as views of plant, water, landscapes, natural materials and non-visual stimuli such as movement of air, sounds of nature and water and tactile experiences.

The proposed home comprises 10,000sqft elegant living space over 3 floors with extensive wrap around terraces and 360 degree views of the surrounding garden. The stepped terraces accentuate horizontality and follow the natural topography of the site. Extensive amount of greening in the form of green roofs and 700mm deep terrace planters are proposed to help integrating the building into the green belt.
