Villa S, Three Rivers, Hertfordshire
Contemporary remodelling of a 1960s villa in a Private Housing Estate Conservation Area.
The relatively large 1,14ha site lies in the heart of a Private Housing Estate, a Conservation Area characterised by large, detached houses built on generous plots of land . The outstanding natural beauty of the area largely due to the extensive coverage of indigenous mature trees. A side channel of a river runs across the site just north of the existing building.
It was the property’s new owners desire to modernise the existing building both externally and internally to suit their contemporary lifestyle.
We used a light touch approach externally, keeping the main massing of the building and adding only a small 3m rear extension on the ground floor. The openings are enlarged in strategic areas to provide better views of the nature surrounding the house.
The internal changes were driven by the owners’ desire to have large open spaces on the ground floor and more generous bedrooms suites above.
